During the conversation, the sides underlined that Uzbek and Tajik people are connected with centuries-old and time-tested relations of friendship and cooperation, which create favourable and solid foundation for further fruitful cooperation based on the principles of good neighbourliness, mutual respect and consideration of the interest of each other.
Shavkat Mirziyoyev conveyed to the President of Tajikistan a gratitude for his personal participation at the funeral ceremonies in Samarkand and his sincere words of condolences to the Uzbek people on the passing away of the First President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov, who stood at the origins of present Uzbek-Tajik relations.
Interim President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev held a telephone conversation with the President of Tajikistan Emomali Rakhmon on 5 October 2016.

Shavkat Mirziyoyev and Emomali Rakhmon affirmed readiness to continue open and wide dialogue and expressed their assurance that proposals and agreements, which were supported in recent Uzbek-Tajik exchanges at various levels, will allow gradual implementation of concrete tasks on further strengthening close cooperation for the benefit of the peoples of the two countries and for ensuring peace and stability in the region.
